Egg was a British Canterbury band that existed from 1968 to 1974 .

history

In May and June 1968 the original line-up of Egg appeared under the name Uriel in London and Woodford ; after the recording of the first demo cassette, guitarist Steve Hillage left the band in August of the same year in favor of his studies.

Uriel changed her name to The Egg in January 1969 at the urging of the management of the London club Middle Earth , which from December 1968 also led the band itself , which was shortened to Egg a little later . Under this name, the debut single Seven Is A Jolly Good Time was released in August 1969 on the Nova label , a subsidiary of Decca Records , under whose logo the first regular album Egg was released the following year .

Egg officially broke up in July 1972, but reunited in 1974 to record the album The Civil Surface . After the release of this album, the group parted ways for good.

Members

Members of Egg were Dave Stewart (organ / keyboards), Mont Campbell (vocals and bass guitar) and Clive Brooks (drums). While Uriel had mainly played cover versions, Egg went on to perform their own songs; especially Campbell wrote many of the plays.

Arzachel

In 1969, a year after its founding, Egg signed a record deal with Decca Records . Around the same time, the Roulette label made Dave Stewart an offer to record an LP with psychedelic music that was in great demand at the time. Because both Egg and Uriel were contractually bound to Decca, the group decided to accept the offer under the name Arzachel and with Steve Hillage on guitar, i.e. in the original Uriel line-up . After the recording of the self-titled album Arzachel , the group broke up in the same year.

music

Egg's music was a mix of progressive rock and psychedelia. It was dominated by Dave Stewart's keyboards. Following on from the Wilde Flowers , the band with Caravan and Soft Machine , which emerged from the Wilde Flowers , are now considered to be the pioneers of the Canterbury sound , which experienced its heyday in the 70s.
