Eggthér ( Old Norse Eggþér ) is a giant in Norse mythology who is mentioned in the Völuspá , which belongs to the song collection of the Song Edda , in the time of the Ragnarök .

He is described as the guardian of the giantesses in the iron forest, sitting on a hill and plucking a harp. Nearby, the red rooster Fjalar crows on the gallows tree, which is interpreted either as the world tree Yggdrasill , a sacrificial grove or a bird tree.

“Sat þar á haugi ok sló hörpu, gýgjar hirðir, glaðr Egðir; gól um hánum í gaglviði, fagrrauðr hani, sá er Fjalarr heitir. "

“There sat on the hill and struck the harp, the giantess keeper, the cheerful Egdir. Before him sang in the bird forest, the bright red rooster, called Fialar. "
