Ego is the fourth solo album by the German rapper Fard . It was released on October 9, 2015 via the Ruhrpott Elite and Code Rouge labels .

background

After Fard had released the collab album Talion 2 with Snaga in 2014 , the contents of which were discussed controversially, the rapper began work on another solo album. At the beginning of the production the idea was to divide the album into five "phases", to which the songs can be assigned. Fard had the " wishful thinking [...] to tell a little film ". By working with the Warner label, Fard had the financial opportunity to invite the Beats producers to his recording studio in Gelsenkirchen and to work on the songs together for several days.

On July 30, 2015, Fard announced the release date and title of his fourth solo album, Ego . The Latin term was chosen because the album represented the rapper very strongly. So ego stands for " for [s] a career, for [s] a music, for [s] an attitude. “With the release of the first video, Traumfängerphase , the album began to be marketed on July 31st. Advance sales started at the same time.

In the course of the refugee crisis in Europe in 2015 , Fard published the song Mittellos auf dem Mediterranean . In 1991 he fled Iran with his parents and was housed in a refugee home for a while . Due to his appeals in social networks to show humanity in dealing with refugees, as well as his own background, media coverage of Fard increased.

reception

success

Ego entered the German album charts at number 5. In Switzerland, the publication was able to position itself at number 2, with which it achieved a better ranking than the sampler Chronik 3 from Selfmade Records , which was also number 1 in the German charts. In Austria, Ego entered 12th place.

criticism

The e-zine Laut.de rated Ego with three out of a possible five points. According to editor Laura Sprenger, Fard has released an album that is entertaining " despite the foreseeable subject matter and the length over long distances ." Although the rapper does not lack “ technical and lyrical talent ”, Fard needs “ more than double time and lots of how comparisons ” to establish himself as one of the best rappers in Germany. Ego is divided into five chapters called "mezzanines". While Fard presented himself in the dream catcher phase asangry and inconsiderate contemporaries who spit around ”, HuckleberryFinn phase marked “ the weakest of the five mezzanines ”. The pieces Kalt wie Schnee and Sehnsucht stand on the " borderline to kitsch ", but also prove " Fard's knack for radio-compatible hooks ". With the successful collaboration with Snaga, Prophet and Mobb Deep as well as “ a talented, incognito working singer ” in the song Maskenball , the “ selection of the feature guests can be described as almost perfect ”. Only Amir the singer seems like a foreign body through his " soulless refrains." "

In a review on Rap.de, Norbert Haslam certified the album as having " flow, technique, feeling, arrogant self-expression and a red thread ", which means that " everything is there ", but " nothing that makes an album totally extraordinary would do ". With Ego, Fard orientates himself “ on a classic drama that, like his long player, can be divided into five acts ”. The first and third acts are “ personal and thoughtful ”, while the HuckleberryFinn phase offers “ more classic battlerap ”. The basis of the productions remains the " well-known street sound, but also current developments " such as trap are included . In particular, the beats of the pieces Tipicophase (Mezzanine) and HuckleberryFinnPhase (Mezzanine) give Fards Flows enough space due to their " low [n] bpm number " to " really come into their own ". In addition, the high number of producers "has a positive effect on the complexity of the long player. "

Sven Aumiller rated the album for MZEE.com . Fard presented his text “ technically extremely well-versed ”, but “ new or innovative [...] at least lyrically, little stood out. "For example, lyrics about" the harsh reality on the street "or love songs" with a corny singing hook by Amir the singer [...] are unfortunately nothing that one has not heard many times before. “In contrast, however, the“ mezzazines ”are impressive. The productions are also highlighted positively. In particular, " Abaz or Joshimixu offer steep models that Fard also knows how to transform confidently ". In summary, Ego is simply fun because of the " hard sound [s] and a [em] rapper who understands his craft ".
