Egon Josef Münzenberg (* 1940 in Heerlen as Egon Josef Andre ; † January 26, 2014 ) was a German architect and football official. From 1978 to 1984 he was President of Alemannia Aachen .

Live and act

The nephew of the former national player Reinhold Munzenberg followed his uncle and incumbent president to the presidium of Alemannia Aachen in 1974. With the establishment of the double-track Second Bundesliga at the beginning of the 1974/75 season, in which Alemannia also played, Egon Munzenberg in the Presidium made a significant contribution to ensuring that the squad was upgraded for the new league at great financial expense. The sporting success did not materialize, however, and they almost got relegated in the 1977/78 season. In the same year, Egon Munzenberg was elected President and under his leadership a number of successful years for the football club followed, which culminated in qualifying for the single-track 2nd Bundesliga in the 1981/82 season.

From the next season the club was able to stabilize in the upper table region, but the aspired promotion to the Bundesliga was not achieved and Munzenberg changed coaches seven times in the next three years, which was unique in German football. Due to the associated severance payments and simultaneously declining income, the association accumulated a debt level of around 3.5 million DM until 1984. At the same time the real estate empire collapsed for the "Baulöwen" Münzenberg due to excessive financial commitment and the crisis in the construction industry and the construction company Goffart & Münzenberg , in which Egon was involved, had to file for bankruptcy. The subsequent settlement procedure, with a volume of more than 100 million D-Marks, was the largest in Germany at the time. Due to a guarantee for 12 million Marks taken over by Munzenberg, the club also got into trouble. In 1984, Münzenberg moved to Canada, where he was involved in three large commercial buildings in Vancouver, and from there declared his resignation by faxing the Alemannia Aachen. In 1987 Egon Munzenberg paid off his debts to the association with a transfer of 400,000 DM.

At the age of 73, Münzenberg, who had followed the development of Alemannia Aachen to the end, died of a heart attack while on vacation in Bali.
