Athletic career

Egon Schmidt's football career in GDR-wide games lasted only four years. In the 1951/52 season he was a member of the company sports community (BSG) Chemie Leipzig, which played in the GDR league. There Schmidt was used as a midfielder in the second and third league games. He then moved to the second-rate GDR league club BSG Einheit Ost Leipzig. There he played 16 of the 24 league games in the 1952/53 season, after which Unit East rose to the GDR league. In his second first division season Schmidt was called up 17 times from the 6th league game to the 28th and final league round. He initially played in midfield again, but was used in defense towards the end of the season. He scored twice as a goal scorer, in the 13th league match against Turbine Erfurt and in the last match against Rotation Dresden with a penalty. After 19 league games with two goals and 16 missions without a goal in the GDR league, Egon Schmidt disappeared from higher-class football.
