EgyptSat 2 (MisrSat 2) is an earth observation satellite operated by the Egyptian Authority for Remote Sensing and Space Sciences (NARSS).

construction

The three-axis stabilized satellite is equipped with CCD cameras for visible and infrared light that were developed in the Peleng Development Office (OAO Peleng) and the National Center for Information Technology and Sources (NIRUP) in Minsk . These have a swath width of 1,400 kilometers and a calculated resolution of four meters for color images and one meter for monochromatic images. The recordings obtained are intended to be used for mapping Egypt, recording environmental data and disaster risk management and response. The energy supply is provided by three fold-out solar cell arms that cannot be tracked towards the sun and that together can deliver up to 3,000 watts of electrical power. The storage of electrical energy is done by nickel-metal hydride accumulators . The stabilization takes place with the help of star sensors and reaction wheels . X-band communication with data rates between 300 and 600 Mbit / s is used for image transmission . The ground stations are located near Cairo and Aswan in southern Egypt. Telemetry data are transmitted via S-band communication. Egyptsat 2 was named based on a derivative of 559GK Yamal-100 - satellite bus of RKK Energia built and has a design life of 11 years.

Mission history

The satellite was on April 16, 2014 16:20 UTC with a Soyuz-U - carrier rocket from the rocket launch site Baikonur into low-Earth elliptical transfer orbit ( apogee 720 km, perigee 440 km, orbital inclination 51.6 °) brought. From here the satellite reached its deployment orbit at an altitude of 700 km with the help of its own electric engines .

In January 2015, the operation of the satellite was handed over from RKK Energija to NARSS. From April 2015, however, Egyptsat 2 no longer responded to commands from Earth. On July 28, 2016, Energija announced that an improved satellite called Egyptsat A was being planned. It started on February 21, 2019.
