history

The company founded on March 13, 1949 by Gunther Eheim (August 31, 1919 - February 2, 2013) actually specialized in the "repair and manufacture of technical toys". Eheim was particularly well known for its model trolleybuses , the so-called H0 trolley bus . Other well-known model railway accessories from the 1950s / 1960s were the radio and television tower with and without an electromechanically functioning elevator, the H0 suspension railway , the H0 chairlift , the H0 Kanzelwandbahn, the H0 Lorenseilbahn and the functional VW T1 rail trolley; Another single product was the Stratos tethered aircraft. Their production was transferred to the Brawa company in 1963 - together with the entire model making division .

A centrifugal pump with magnetic coupling, which was used for a model fountain, was the basis for the invention of an external filter. The first so-called suction filter goes into series production in 1963. It was a pot filter into which water flows in from below and flows through various filter media. A pump on the pump head conveys the water back into the aquarium. This principle has remained the same with the Eheim filters of the Classic series to this day.

Since 1986 the company has also been producing water filters for outdoor use, such as garden ponds.

In 1993 Eheim took over the company MP-Aquarien (Müller und Pfleger) , a manufacturer of glass aquariums based in Rockenhausen . According to its own information, MP is number three on the European aquarium market. The Rockenhausen plant also houses EHEIM ShopDesign. EHEIM ShopDesign develops and builds both animal sales systems and shop fittings for the pet trade. About 90 employees are employed.

In 2003 Eheim took over the company Eugen Jäger GmbH in Wüstenrot , which according to its own information is the global market leader for heating rods in aquariums. These were sold in America until 2003 under the name EBO-Jaeger ; EBO stands for Eberhard Böttcher, who exported the devices to the USA together with Wolfgang Jäger.

The company has been operating under the name Eheim aquatics group since 2004 .

In 2011, the EHEIM brand was defined as the umbrella brand for the group: All products of the EHEIM group are only marketed under the EHEIM brand.

The founder Gunther Eheim died on February 2, 2013 at the age of 93.

Since 2014, all business areas and companies belonging to EHEIM have been reported as members of the EHEIM Group. It can be seen that in addition to the companies EHEIM, Müller & Pfleger and Jäger, the following companies also belong to the EHEIM group:

  • Intek GmbH, manufacturer of partition wall systems
  • SFD Aviation, Stuttgart flight service
  • Contact Air Technik GmbH, Aircraft Maintenance
