Ruin of the St. Vitus Church

The former Roman Catholic parish church Stockern is a church ruin in the Waldviertel village of Stockern in the municipality of Meiseldorf in the Horn district in Lower Austria . It was dedicated to St. Vitus .

history

The parish was first mentioned in documents in 1314. In the 18th century the St. Vitus Church consisted of a Gothic choir , a baroque nave and the west tower. After the church became more and more desolate due to floods and moisture, it was decided in 1907 to build a new parish church ( Hl. Herz Jesu ) and let the old one fall into disrepair.

Three paintings by Kremser Schmidt from the old parish church were sold to Vienna to finance the construction of the new church.
