The quarry near Dettelbach

Former Muschelkalkbruch south-southwest of Dettelbach (officially former Muschelkalkbruch SSW von Dettelbach , also Muschelkalkbruch Dettelbach ) is a geotope in the district of Dettelbach in the Lower Franconian district of Kitzingen .

Geographical location

The former quarry is located in the extreme south of the Dettelbach municipal area. Further to the south, the federal motorway 3 passes the break in the immediate vicinity. To the east is the motorway bridge at Dettelbach, the state road St 2270 also runs to the east along the Main. The so-called Rotamergraben flows through the area of the quarry. The Mainstockheim area begins further south .

description

The quarry opens up the upper 30 m of the Upper Muschelkalk (Meißner Formation, Ladinium ) and overlying layers of the Lower Keuper . The exposed layer sequence gives a particularly good impression of the sedimentation of the normal facies of the Upper Muschelkalk in the deeper water of the basin interior. The so-called fossil debris banks make it possible to differentiate between the different small cycles. The Cycloidesbank that was previously seen here in profile has been almost completely dismantled. Only a few documents can still be found on the quarry floor.

The Cycloidesbank is full of fossil brachiopods of the species Coenothyris cycloides ( Zenker 1836) and therefore easy to recognize in the handpiece. In the marly areas above this bench, some finds of rare bony fish have been made. The limestones alternate between oak and beech shill limestone , as well as bulging marl limestone. The Bavarian State Office for the Environment classifies the area as a geotope with the number 675A008.

Development

The shell limestone quarry was operated until the 20th century, before the facility was converted into a landfill for excavated earth. However, the area may only be partially filled because the sequence of layers is unique in Germany. The quarry is also used today as a special, scientific reference object . The general geoscientific significance is described as "very important".
