The Almonte Post Office is a historic post office built at the end of the 19th century in Almonte in the Canadian province of Ontario . Almonte is now a district of the City of Mississippi Mills . Its current address is 73, Mill Street, Mississippi Mills, Ontario, K0A, Canada , and the building is in a triangular lot on the corner of Little Bridge and Mill Streets .

The former post office was named a cultural monument of the formerly independent city of Almonte in the province of Ontario, Canada on December 19, 1985.

It was built between 1889 and 1891 according to the plans of the architect Thomas Fuller . The cost of building the post office was approximately CAD 30,000 ; thus it is one of the smaller construction projects for the construction of public buildings in the Canadian small towns at the end of the 19th century.

Due to its central location and easy accessibility, the building should occupy a central place in local economic life. In the Almonte district, the robust and relatively large building compared to the neighboring houses is still noticeable.

The post office is characterized by several architectural styles, especially the neo-Romanesque . The builder Robert Cameron adhered closely to Thomas Fuller's specifications: The post office has a steep gable roof and house walls made of different colored stones. For the ground was Beckwith - limestone used. The exterior walls are made of North-Elmsley - sandstone and decorative elements from the red Nova Scotia built -Sandstein.

A central clock tower was built between 1913 and 1916, commissioned by William Thoburn , Member of Parliament, to be built. It was alleged that William Thoburn only placed the order to ensure the punctual presence of his employees at his local mill. The clock tower can be seen from many points within the borough.

Inside, the historic floor and the wooden staircase with its massive and bulky construction have been preserved.
