The Ehrenfriedhof in the area of the independent city of Heilbronn in Baden-Württemberg is a grave complex for 4985 of the total of around 6500 victims of the air raid on Heilbronn on December 4, 1944.

Geographical location

The Ehrenfriedhof is located about 3 km east-south-east of Heilbronn city center on the Pfühlbach in the wooded Köpfertal valley close to the city with the nature reserve of the same name .

History and description

The 120 ares large facility was laid out as a mass grave at the beginning of December 1944 after the largely undamaged Heilbronn main cemetery and an area adjacent to the cemetery had proven to be far too small for the burial of the victims. The cemetery of honor consists of ten mass grave fields, seven of which are occupied. The large complex, designed by Karl Elsässer in 1947/1948 , is park-like and very simple. In addition to a large metal cross, there are a few symbolic stone crosses in the middle of old trees.

In the entrance area there is a life-size bronze Pietà by the Stuttgart Academy Director Robert Poetzelberger , created around 1920 , which was originally on the family grave of the Hagenbucher family in the main cemetery and was brought to the cemetery of honor in 1953.

Every year there is a memorial service in the Ehrenfriedhof on the anniversary of the air raid on Heilbronn.
