The cemetery of honor at Haddebyer Noor is a war cemetery in the Schleswig-Holstein district of Haddeby . It is located on the federal highway 76 between the places Haddeby and Fahrdorf directly on the Haddebyer Noor .

history

Large quantities of gravel were required for the expansion of federal highway 76. The attention of the road builders fell on the Karberg , which had already served as a gravel pit in earlier times. At the same time, the Ministry of the Interior of Schleswig-Holstein was looking for a suitable place to build a central cemetery of honor for war dead. A common solution was found for both problems. The construction company was allowed to take gravel from the Karberg for road construction; In return, the company undertook to maintain or restore the silhouette of the mountain. This work was completed in 1959.

As part of an ideas competition, various designs for the further use of the hill were submitted. The selected design envisaged heavy forest cover on the hill, with a small hollow below the summit serving as the focal point of the system. Here, a star-shaped concrete slab about 10 by 18 meters rests on four raw concrete pillars.

It was originally planned that the approximately 400 soldier graves scattered in the Schleswig district should be reburied in the newly created collective cemetery. However, the district committee decided to reburial only in exceptional cases. Graves in cemeteries should remain there and be cared for. Instead, all field graves and dead people from various mass graves were to be transferred to the Karberg, especially graves that were not permanently cared for.

On July 28, 1962, the place of honor was consecrated with a solemn act.

Since then, 1074 war dead have been lying in five fields on an area of 13,000 m², including 800 soldiers and 274 men, women and children who lost their lives uninvolved in fighting. The dead also include 343 foreign war victims, including forced laborers, prisoners of war and concentration camp inmates: 10 French, 2 Belgians, 4 Dutch, 37 Hungarians, 2 Lithuanians, 8 Latvians, 1 Turkish, 190 Soviets, 60 Poles, 15 Yugoslavs, 7 Estonians, 3 Romanians and 1 Dane. The names, the year of birth and the year of death of the dead are given in the cemetery. With 180 dead, the gravestones only say "Unknown" .

The current maintenance of the facility is subject to the Haddeby office. In 2016 and 2017 extensive renovation work was carried out; Among other things, the staircase was renewed and barrier-free access to the facility was created.
