Expelled from Hirschberg in June 1946 , Amler found accommodation in Seinstedt . He worked in agriculture for two years before he was able to start an apprenticeship with a wood sculptor in Wolfenbüttel . He finished it in Lippe , in Lemgo and with Karl Ehlers in Detmold. In 1954 he was able to start studying at the Werkkunstschule in Flensburg. In 1956 he passed the state examination. After that, he spent three years in the master class of Fritz Thomas-Gottesberg , who had studied at the Bad Warmbrunn wood carving school before 1945 . In 1958, Amler started his own business as a sculptor and graphic artist . In 1962 he found a piece of land in Glücksburg (Baltic Sea) . With his wife, he turned a barrack into a house, a studio and an exhibition room. Since 1959 he has been active in adult education in Germany and Denmark. In 2009 he gave his hundredth drawing course at the Flensburg Adult Education Center. Since 1988 he has been leading drawing and painting trips abroad. He worked in natural stone , wood , bronze , aluminum , modeling and in-situ concrete , ceramics , bog oak and plastic . Mosaics, glass windows, wall designs, tapestries, fountains, baptismal fonts, crucifixes and art for sacred and profane public spaces were created. Early works deal with flight and displacement. In 1965 he created the nine lead-glazed windows of the East German Patenhalle in Fahrdorf . The glazing work was carried out by Günter Kruse (Flensburg), the renewal of the window front by Glas Prochnow (Schleswig). In 1966, the expellees memorial, The Dead of the Expulsion, followed in the memorial cemetery at Haddebyer Noor . The philosophical-religious seriousness of his works of art earned him commissions for churches and chapels.

“Although Amler always wraps his figures in long robes and neither carves out their faces nor their hands, so the bodies are abstracted almost to a non-representational form, the groups appear as if they consist of nothing but personalities. The body posture, different sizes, the inclination of the head, an implied gesture make the sculptures speak and let them convey a message. They are talking sculptures. "

- Idis Birgit Hartmann

Other groups of works include small and animal sculptures as well as fountains, for example in the spa gardens of Glücksburg (1968), in front of the police building in Schleswig (1972), on the old town hall market in Schleswig (1984) and the Büdelsdorf cemetery (1987). His work has been shown in more than seventy solo and group exhibitions at home and abroad, including 1979 in the Gerhart-Hauptmann-Haus in Agnetendorf . His exhibition space and the sculpture park in Glücksburg offer a revealing insight into Amler's work. His works have been acquired by renowned private collectors, museums and galleries in Germany, Sweden, Denmark, France, Australia, London, San Francisco, Prague, Tokyo, Rotterdam, Moscow and Guatemala City. By his own admission, Amler “actually belongs to Africa”.
