history

Eichelsee lies in a gentle hollow on the course of the Thierbach in the fertile Ochsenfurt Gau. Old place names were Eslichsheim , Eschlichesheim , Eicholuesheim and Eigelsheim (still 1748). The place name is not derived from an oak or a lake. In Eichel a Frankish proper name echoes, while see is only the dialect spelling for home .

The first written mention dates from the year 1101, when an Adelold donated goods in Eicholuesheim to the St. Peter monastery in Würzburg . The Haug Abbey in Würzburg in Eichelsee was already wealthy in 1234. The provost of Haug Abbey remained the village lord until 1803.

From 1814 to 1862 Eichelsee belonged to the district court of Ochsenfurt , from 1862 to 1972 to the district of Ochsenfurt . On April 1, 1975, the political community was dissolved and incorporated into the community of Gaukönigshofen.

For centuries agriculture determined life in the village. This only changed after the Second World War. Today only about a quarter of the 23 agricultural properties are run as full-time businesses. The vast majority of the population are employees.

Every year on May 1st, the traditional May celebration takes place on the village square. It is musically framed by the Thierbach musicians Eichelsee and Franconian folk dances are performed.
