The Joseph von Eichendorff monument in Racibórz is located at the intersection of Młyńska and Mickiewicza streets, the former Zbor Square.

Description and history

The memorial shows Joseph von Eichendorff sitting on an oak trunk, holding a pen and notebook in his hands and his head turned to the left. The sculpture is 245 cm tall and 410 cm high with the base.

The present monument is a copy of the original one by Johannes Boese from 1909, which was removed after the Red Army marched into Racibórz in the spring of 1945 and then disappeared. The original memorial was ceremoniously unveiled on September 26, 1909, the 52nd anniversary of Eichendorff's death. The idea for the erection of a monument in Racibórz for the poet, who was born near the city, came up on the 50th anniversary of his death on the initiative of the song table Racibórz.

Today's copy of the monument was unveiled on September 4, 1994 with the participation of Franz-Albrecht Metternich-Sandor . The reconstruction was realized by the German Friendship Circle in the Silesia district .
