Franz-Albrecht Metternich-Sándor
Franz-Albrecht Maximilian Wolfgang Josef Thaddäus Maria Metternich-Sándor (until 1926 Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst-Breunner-Enkevoirth ; * October 23, 1920 at Schloss Groß Rauden in the district of Ratibor ; † June 25, 2009 in Cetona , Italy) was an Austrian member of the Line Ratibor of the House of Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst and as their boss was widely known as Duke of Ratibor and Prince of Corvey .
family
Franz-Albrecht was the youngest child of Victor III. von Ratibor from Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst-Breunner-Enkevoirth (1879–1945) and Elisabeth Pauline zu Oettingen-Oettingen and Oettingen-Spielberg (1886–1976). He was adopted in 1926 by Klementine von Metternich -Sándor (1870–1963), a great-aunt on his mother's side, and has since carried her family name.
After the Second World War he lived in Westphalia before settling in Austria in 1955.
On October 2, 1962 he married Isabella Countess zu Salm-Reifferscheidt-Krautheim and Dyck (* 1939), daughter of Franz Josef zu Salm-Reifferscheidt-Krautheim and Dyck and Cäcilie zu Salm-Salm (1911–1991) in the Nikolauskloster near Schloss Dyck .
He was the owner of Schloss Grafenegg and Schloss Corvey and lived in Schloss Neuaigen near Tulln in Lower Austria . He earned a special reputation for the renovation of Grafenegg Castle and as a promoter of culture.
Princely Library Corvey
Franz-Albrecht Metternich-Sándor was the owner of one of the largest private libraries in Germany, the Princely Library in Corvey . It consists of approx. 74,000 volumes and was scientifically cataloged from 1985 to 1998 in cooperation between the owner and the University of Paderborn and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia . Their holdings have been made available to the public in microfiche editions. The participation of Franz-Albrecht Metternich-Sándor in this project is described as exemplary and is considered unique in Germany. The library has books from the 19th century, including very rare editions, including numerous novels and dramas from the Biedermeier period .
Corvey property
Like Corvey Castle, he owned the area of the former monastery settlement and most of the land around Corvey. He donated the associated monastery church together with the westwork to the parish of St. Stephanus and Vitus . Corvey was included in the so-called tentative list by the Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs on September 20, 1999 , which was the prerequisite for the area of the monastery settlement, which his son inherited from him with the exception of the church building that had previously been given away , could be declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2014 .
Awards
In 1995 Metternich-Sándor was awarded the University Medal of the University of Paderborn. In 2003 he received the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon for his services to Corvey , which was presented to him by District Administrator Hubertus Backhaus in the Imperial Hall of Corvey Castle.
