Eichendorffbank
The Eichendorffbank is a listed stone bank in the Klausberg mountains in the north of Halle (Saale) , which was built in memory of Joseph von Eichendorff's student days in the city of Saale . The bank is listed in the register of monuments of the city of Halle under registration number 094 96891.
Eichendorff studied law in Halle from May 1805 to August 1806. With his poem “Bei Halle” he set a lasting monument to the charming surroundings of Halle. It was originally assumed that the poem was written during his student days on the Klausberge with a view of the Saale and Giebichenstein Castle .
However, research by Erich Neuss revealed that the original handwritten form dates from February 1, 1840 and is kept in the manuscript department of the Berlin State Library. The poem was a contribution to the "German Musenalmanach for 1841" . Two years before his death, in 1855, Eichendorff made a second short visit to Halle.
The city councilor Heinrich Niemeyer suggested about twenty years later to create a memorial to the poet. In 1879 the Hallischer Beautification Association under the direction of the Judicial Councilor Herrmann Fiebiger created a simple memorial in the form of a stone (still preserved today not far from the bank) at the location in the Klausberg mountains, from which one has a particularly beautiful view of the Saale and Giebichenstein Castle has built.
Twenty years later, in 1899, the memorial site with the semicircular stone bench and the central obelisk was given its present form. The first two stanzas of the seven-stanza poem "Bei Halle" are carved in the obelisk, as in the simple memorial stone before:
DA IS A CASTLE
Überm TALE
AND LOOKS IN THE
CURRENT ENTRY
THIS IS THE
MERRY SAALE
THIS IS THE GIEBICHENSTEIN
DA I HAVE SO OFTEN
STOOD
THERE flourished valleys
AND HÖHN
AND EVER AFTER ALL
LAND
I SAW NIMMERVOLL
THE WORLD SO BEAUTIFUL
EICHENDORFF
Opposite the bank - with a view of the Saale - there has been a stele with an inscription plate and the complete poem since 2005. Every year on March 10th, a celebration with musical accompaniment and a picnic takes place at the Eichendorffbank on the occasion of the poet's birthday. Another tradition is spring singing, which takes place at the beginning of spring with a choir at the bench.
The bank was restored in 1946 and 1970. However, since the bank with the weathered inscription is again in need of renovation, another restoration is planned by 2020.
