The Eichenspringrüssler ( Orchestes quercus ) is a beetle from the family of weevils (Curculionidae).

features

The red-brown, densely hairy beetles are 2.7 to 3.7 millimeters long. They have close-fitting, silky yellow hair. On the front half of the wing covers there is a broad, lightly haired triangle. The sides of the pronotum and wing covers have long, protruding hairs. The front and middle femora have one tooth, the rear femora a row of pointed teeth. Similar to flea beetles, the beetles have thickened posterior femora with which they can jump to safety in case of danger.

distribution

The beetle species is common in southern Northern Europe, Central Europe and Southern Europe. It is represented in southern and central Scandinavia and the British Isles . It is missing on the Iberian Peninsula . In the south, the occurrence extends over Italy and the Mediterranean islands of Corsica, Sardinia and Sicily to North Africa , in the east to the Middle East .

Way of life

The beetles are mostly observed in the period from April to August. The adult beetles gnaw on the underside of the leaves of various oak trees ( Quercus ), especially on young plants. The leaves can be skeletonized.

The egg-laying (oviposition) takes place after the winter. The females place their eggs on the underside of the leaf in the leaf median nerve. The beetle larvae form a light yellow space mine in the leaf , in which they pupate . Larval development usually lasts from May to June. The new generation beetles appear at the end of June.
