Equal Opportunities Offices (also: Specialist Offices for Equal Opportunities , Equal Opportunities Representatives , Equal Opportunities Commissioners ) are public authorities who promote the legal and actual equality of women and men in all areas of life. The most important fields of action for promoting equality are working life , family , education , politics and society .

In addition to the equality bodies in the public sector, there are also specialists among the social partners and in companies or organizations who are responsible for the gender equality dossier in the relevant field (equality officers, gender specialists).

Equality bodies in Switzerland

The Federal Bureau for Equality between Women and Men (EBG) has existed at national level in Switzerland since 1988, and is subordinate to the Federal Department of Home Affairs . Its mission is to promote gender equality in all areas of life, i. H. the elimination of all forms of direct and indirect discrimination . The EBG is active in the area of information and awareness-raising, provides specific instruments for employers, employees and associations and drafts statements on current topics. The EBG is also responsible for awarding financial aid in accordance with the Equal Opportunities Act .

At the regional level, there is a corresponding cantonal office in 17 of the 26 Swiss cantons, as well as local equal opportunities offices in five cities. The individual equality offices take on different tasks. They are responsible for implementing gender equality in the relevant geographical area, and in some cases their task is to promote gender equality in the canton or city as an employer. Often the focus of the work is more on changing structures than on individual help.

In order to fulfill their task, the equality offices work together with other public authorities, social partners, women's and men's organizations and other economic and social actors. In many places these are integrated through permanent equality commissions of the governments (at national level the Federal Commission for Women's Issues). The national, cantonal and municipal bodies are united in the Swiss Conference of Equal Opportunities Commissioners. The corresponding national specialist office of the Principality of Liechtenstein also belongs to the conference with observer status .

Politically, the usefulness of equality offices is regularly questioned in parliamentary advances. In the canton of Basel-Landschaft , a popular initiative of the Swiss People's Party (SVP) has been submitted to abolish the specialist agency for gender equality. It was rejected in 2008 by the electorate in the canton with 63% no votes.
