eigenfactor

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Eigenfactor is a free, academic website for determining the scientific influence of scientific journals by means of the mutual citations of articles. Eigenfactor also denotes the bibliometric parameter used there for journals.

The website has been online since March 18, 2007 and is maintained by the Bergstrom Laboratory of the Biology Department of the University of Washington . It wants to offer an alternative to the chargeable Impact Factor of the Journal Citation Report from Clarivate Analytics (formerly Thomson Reuters , previously the Institute for Scientific Information ).

Ranking

In contrast to the Impact Factor of Clarivate Analytics, the Eigenfactor evaluates magazines, similar to how Google evaluates websites. Google uses hyperlinks to assess relevance. The Eigenfactor uses citations from specialist journals to identify the most influential journals and draws on the approx. 13,000 journals of the Web of Science , but also uses over 115,000 additional references from newspapers, magazines and other sources. Quotations from journals with a higher influence are assigned more weight than quotes from journals with less influence. The citation development is followed over five years. The Eigenfactor also takes into account the different citation standards and time scales of different scientific disciplines.

The calculation uses the eigenvector centrality from the network analysis , in which a node is more important, the more important its neighboring nodes are. The calculation process is recursive and is carried out using neighborhood matrices .

The Eigenfactor depends on the number of published articles. If all other influencing factors remain constant, the self-factor doubles with double the number of articles in a magazine.

In addition to the Eigenfactor, Scopus and citebase also offer alternatives, e.g. T. Internet-based forms of citation analysis .
