Eigil Nielsen (paleontologist)

Eigil Hans Aage Nielsen (born August 16, 1910 in Copenhagen , † December 8, 1968 in Gentofte ) was a Danish paleontologist.

Nielsen attended the Sorø Akademi and studied in Copenhagen. In 1935 he received his doctorate. He took part in the expedition from Lauge Koch to East Greenland (area of ​​Cape Stosch) and worked on the vertebrate fauna found in the Devonian (amphibians, fish). In addition, he was on long study visits in Stockholm with Erik Stensiö . In the winter of 1932/33 he was in Greenland again. This time he collected ammonites and fish from the Permian and Triassic. In 1936 he was again with Koch in Greenland and in 1939 with Eigil Knuth and Ebbe Munck. He became a curator at the Geological Museum in Copenhagen. In 1957 he became professor of palaeontology in Copenhagen.

Further expeditions to Greenland followed in 1946 and 1955 as part of the Geological Survey of Greenland (GGUS). In 1950 he was doing field research in the Himalayas and in 1953 in South Africa and Madagascar. In the early 1960s he did research in Thailand.

He was considered an expert on fossil fish from the Triassic.

He had been a member of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences since 1965.
