Eiler Hagerup (born December 26, 1736 in Trondheim , † May 19, 1795 ) was a Norwegian lawyer.

Life

His parents were the future bishop of Nidaros Eiler Hagerup d. Ä. (1684–1743) and his wife Anna Cathrine Barhow († February 4, 1737). In 1774 he married Kristine Marie Schmidt.

In 1753 he began his studies in Copenhagen, where he passed his theological exams in 1757 and the Danish law exams in 1767. This was followed by a long trip abroad, first to Sweden, in the spring of 1763 to Germany, in 1764 to France, and in the spring of 1765 he returned to Denmark. In 1767 he published the book Om Kjærlighed til Fædrelandet (About love for the fatherland), which brought him great success, but led to his being deported to a magistrate's post in Finnmarken in 1768 . In 1771 he returned to Copenhagen, where he was appointed the 4th committee in the newly established "Norwegian Chamber" under the Finance College. When the chamber was dissolved after the fall of Struensee , he became 3rd in 1773 in the re-established General Customs Chamber. In 1774 he became a judicial councilor and in 1779 a budget councilor. In 1790 he became a deputy for the city of Copenhagen. He was a member of "Landhusholdningsselskabet" (Society for Peasant Households) and since 1769 a member of "Det norske Videnskabernes Selskab" (Norwegian Scientific Society).

His writing Om Kjærlighed til Fædrelandet was a polemic against the cosmopolitan tendencies of the time and attracted a lot of attention because of its sharp nationalistic tones. It was addressed to the young King Christian VII . Hagerup demanded respect for the language and culture of the country and the people and opposed the use of foreign (especially German) officials by the court and the government and against Tyge Rothes ' cosmopolitan concept of fatherland that fatherland is where you spend your life, which he shortened to a “fatherland where one is doing well” (Patria est ubicunque bene). He demanded that compatriots should have a privilege in filling vacancies, which was directed against Struensee. He became an important writer for the nascent Norwegian national sentiment .
