Einar Gunnarsson (diplomat)

Einar Gunnarsson (* 1966 ) is an Icelandic diplomat who has been Permanent Representative to the United Nations since January 2015 .

Life

Einar Gunnarsson completed a law degree at the University of Iceland after attending school and then worked as a lawyer at the Reykjavík- based law firm GÁJ between 1992 and 1995 . He then joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs , where he initially worked from 1996 and 1998 as Legal Advisor and Deputy Head of the Defense Department and from 1998 to 2000 as First Secretary and Legation Counselor in the Commercial Department. He then served as Counselor at the Embassy and Representation to the European Union in Brussels between 2000 and 2004 and then from 2004 to 2006 as Deputy Permanent Representative and Counselor at the Permanent Mission to the international organizations in Geneva . From 2007 to 2008 he was head of the human resources department of the Foreign Service and from 2008 to 2009 head and chief negotiator of the department for international trade relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, before he was permanent state secretary and thus the highest official of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs between 2009 and 2014.

On January 20, 2015, Einar Gunnarsson presented his credentials as Permanent Representative to the United Nations . At the same time, he has been accredited as ambassador to Cuba since 2015 . In addition, he was elected Chairman of the Committee on Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Issues (Main Committee 3) of the UN General Assembly on May 31, 2017 .

Einar Gunnarsson is married and has two daughters.
