Unit 61398
Unit 61398 is the common name of a suspected cyberwar unit of the People's Liberation Army of the People's Republic of China , which is supposed to deal with espionage and sabotage of computer systems, preferably in the USA. The unit 61,398 should in recent years in computer systems of the US government, the US military (u. A. Department of Defense , NASA ) and also multiple major in computer media companies (eg. As the New York Times , Wall Street Journal ) have hacked. Important commercial companies (e.g. General Motors ) are also said to have been spied on.
The US government has been complaining for some time about the activities of this unit, which, according to US figures , should include several thousand English-speaking members with excellent IT skills. According to the US security firm Mandiant, the headquarters of the unit will be in a high-rise building in Shanghai's Pudong financial center .
China itself denies the existence of such a group.

Nothing is currently known about the naming. Most likely the name goes back to an internal naming of the Chinese army.
