Community of residents (China)
The community of residents ( Chinese 社區 / 社区 , Pinyin shèqū ) is the lowest administrative unit in the urban areas of China. In rural areas it corresponds to the village ( 村 , cūn ) and the gaqaa ( 嘎查 , gāchá ). The street district or the large municipality stands above the community of residents.
In terms of political representation and power, the resident communities are of no great importance, but are of great organizational importance. The implementation of the policies decided on at higher levels, the distribution of mail, the censuses (every ten years) would not be possible without them. The “residents' committees”, also known as “neighborhood committees” ( 居民委員會 / 居民委员会 , jūmín wěiyuánhùi ) are political representatives of the resident communities .
It is currently not possible to give an exact number of the population communities, as this is constantly increasing due to the ongoing administrative reform in China.
