Banner ( Chinese 旗 , Pinyin Qí ; Mongolian Hôxûû ) is the name for an administrative unit at the county level in Inner Mongolia , an autonomous region of the People's Republic of China .
During the Qing Dynasty , the Mongols, who were under Manchurian rule, were integrated into the military-political system of the Eight Banners . The later geographical-administrative units emerged from this. Each banner consisted of several sums . Several banners formed a bundle ( aimag ). Today there are still 52 banners (including three autonomous) in Inner Mongolia, which belong to the three remaining confederations or to one of the prefecture-level cities .
