EirGrid is the Irish transmission system operator for electricity. Founded in 2001, the wholly state owned company is headquartered in Dublin . The company is a suitcase word made up of "Éire", the Gaelic word for Ireland, and "Grid", English for electricity network.

History and holdings

EirGrid was created in 2001 as a spin-off from the also state-owned electricity company Electricity Supply Board (ESB). Like the ESB, EirGrid is wholly owned by the Irish state and managed by the relevant Irish ministry, the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources .

EirGrid operates the electricity transmission network in Ireland . This includes 6,500 km of overhead lines , including extra-high voltage (400  kV ) and distribution network lines (110 and 220 kV) as well as 100 transformer stations. The transmission network is owned by ESB National Grid (ESBNG), which also operates the network technically. EirGrid is only responsible for economic operation and non-discriminatory network access.

EirGrid is the only Irish company in the Association of European Transmission System Operators (ENTSO-E).
