The Fürstenberg / Havel railway ferry is a ferry in Fürstenberg / Havel across the Havel . The ferry service started in 1934 and stopped in 1993. This ferry has been a listed building since 1993.

history

The ferry for Fasstoff GmbH in Fürstenberg / Havel was supposed to be officially built . However, this company went bankrupt in 1926 and was acquired by the Army Weapons Office in 1929 . The name Fasstoff GmbH was retained in order to hide the storage and production of weapons in the former halls of Fasstoff GmbH, which was prohibited by the Versailles Treaty ( Montan scheme ). In 1934 the production of bullet cases began, mainly for the 8.8 cm FlaK 18/36/37 of the German Wehrmacht. These bullet casings then had to be brought to the Strelitz air ammunition facility near Neustrelitz. The railway ferry was needed for this, as the hydraulic engineering office objected to the construction of a bridge. The ferry track was completed in 1936 with a connection to the Britz – Fürstenberg line . Until 1950, the Havel formed the border in this area between the Mecklenburg Fürstenberg (southern pier) and the Brandenburg municipality of Ravensbrück (northern pier).

During the Second World War , prisoners from the Ravensbrück concentration camp were temporarily transported to the ammunition factories on the train ferry . From 1945 the Red Army used the ferry to transport military equipment and fuel. The pulp works were a repair center for tanks and trucks in the Soviet occupation zone and GDR . The ferry operation was the responsibility of the Fürstenberg sawmill, which mainly transported sawn timber by ferry and served the Soviet side on behalf of the Greifswald Reich Railway Directorate .

After the fall of the Wall , initially a group of schoolchildren tried to build the railway ferry, and since 2007 an interest group of citizens, the city administration and the Association for Forest History, Regional History and Environmental Education, taking into account the requirements of monument protection. By 2009, the entire ferry system on both banks of the Havel was unlocked again and the track system made visible. The railway ferry itself urgently needs renovation, which can be carried out by the shipyard in Malz. The relevant preparatory work and coordination has currently been carried out by the interest group. In order to collect the required sum of around 40,000 euros, broad support from the public is required.

In 2013 the ferry was lifted out of the water and given an anti-corrosion layer. According to the Märkischer online newspaper, there is no provision for a floating processing.

Technical specifications

The railway ferry has a pontoon shape . The length is 34.18 meters and the width 5.18 meters. The load capacity of the ferry is said to have been 170 tons, while the draft increased from 0.70 meters to 1.30 meters. The height difference was compensated by the landing bridges, which are mounted on hinges. The ferry had a diesel engine with around 30  hp . It was built in 1934 at the Schichau shipyard in Elbing, then East Prussia .
