Railway accident at Krouna
The railway accident near Krouna on June 24, 1995 on the railway line Svitavy – Žďárec u Skutče near Krouna in the Chrudim district in the Czech Republic was the head-on collision of a railcar with some escaped freight cars. 19 people died.
Starting position
The line is single-track and has a gradient of up to 20 ‰ between the Čachnov train station and the Krouna zastávka stop. Train radio did not yet exist on the line at that time.
At Čachnov station there was a freight train with loaded open freight cars and a company car for the driver.
Railcar 810.061 was a passenger train from Krouna to Čachnov . There were a total of 23 people on the train, including the train crew.
the accident
When shunting in the Čachnov station, three freight cars and the train's company car "ran away" into the slope and reached speeds of up to 100 km / h. Because of the missing train radio, the driver of the approaching passenger train could not be informed. While the freight wagons derailed shortly before the scene of the accident and stopped, the company car rolled on and hit the passenger train head-on near the Krouna zastávka stop.
consequences
18 people died in the almost completely destroyed railcar, one more after the recovery. Four people were also seriously injured.
In the subsequent criminal proceedings against the engine driver and the train attendant of the freight train, both were convicted of negligent and gross violation of the regulations and their duties, the former to eight years, the latter to five years imprisonment.
To commemorate the accident , a stone memorial was erected 60 meters from the scene of the accident. All victims are listed on the attached plaque.
The accident accelerated the introduction of train radio at the České dráhy (ČD) railway company .
