Durban Railway Accident (1994)

In the Durban railway accident on March 8, 1994, a train derailed near Durban . 65 people died.

the accident

The fully occupied train of the South African railway operator Transnet was on its way from Cato Ridge to Durban in the morning rush hour. It carried about 800  travelers . The accident occurred in a curve 20 km west of the city. Nine of the eleven cars on the train overturned against an embankment . According to the South African specialists who investigated the accident, the derailment was due to the fact that the train was traveling at too high a speed for this curve.

consequences

65 people died and 370 others were injured.

At the end of March 2013, a large memorial and memorial service for the victims and their relatives took place on the Mpola sports grounds in Dassenhoek .
