Haftchan railway accident

In the Haftchan railway accident on November 25, 2016, two trains collided four kilometers from the Haftchan train station , between the cities of Semnan and Damghan , Iran . 49 people died.

Starting position

Both trains were traveling on the Garmsar – Mashhad railway line , on which a maximum speed of 140 km / h exists at the later accident site : the first, an express train from Tabriz to Mashhad , the second, also an express train, from Tehran to Mashhad. There were around 550 people on both trains. The first train had a technical problem with its air brake after leaving Semnan and was left lying on the open track in the area of ​​the later accident site . He was secured by a "stop" showing railroad signal backwards. The dispatcher also knew. Fixing the technical problem was delayed. Meanwhile the dispatchers had shift changes.

The staff of the second train then asked the train control center whether it could continue. The new dispatcher assumed a signal interference and agreed. According to another representation, the replaced dispatcher released the journey for the second train and the locomotive driver drove into the route, although the automatic train protection warned him. He assumed there was a malfunction. The train was reaching full line speed when it hit the first train, which was still standing, at around 7:37 a.m.

consequences

49 people died, 103 were also injured. The director of the Railway Company of the Islamic Republic of Iran , Mohsen Pourseyyed Aqae , resigned on November 27, 2016 because of the accident.
