Holmsveden railway accident
In the railway accident in Holmsveden on February 16, 1917, a train ran over a track in Holmsveden station , Sweden , and hit a water tower . 11 people died.
Starting position
Holmsveden is located on the Norra stambana between Ockelbo and Bollnäs . On this day, the express train 3048 was traveling north. A large part of the passengers were Russian war casualties . Due to energy-saving measures, the lighting in Holmsveden station was switched off.
the accident
An accidentally incorrectly set switch led the train to a dead end , ran over the buffer stop and hit a water tower behind it . Since the lighting was switched off, neither the dispatcher nor the engine driver recognized the wrongly set points in time.
consequences
11 people died, 40 were also injured. The locomotive and the first four cars were badly damaged.
