Khanna railway accident

In the railway accident in Khanna on November 26, 1998, part of an express train derailed . An oncoming second express train drove into the derailed car . Well over 200 people died.

Starting position

The Golden Temple Express , train No. 2903, was traveling with 16 cars on its journey from Mumbai to Amritsar between the stations of Khanna ( Punjab ) and Chawapail on the double-track route to Ludhiana . The route belongs to the network of the Northern Railway Zone of Indian Railways .

In the opposite direction, the express train No. 3152, the Jammu Tawi-Sealdah Express , ran from Jammu to Calcutta . There were around 2,500 passengers on both trains together .

the accident

Due to a broken rail, shortly before 3:15 a.m., the last 10 cars of the Frontier Golden Temple Mail derailed , six of which then protruded into the clearance profile of the track in the opposite direction. The front part of the train only came to a halt 3 km further. The drivers of the train and the oncoming Jammu Tawi-Sealdah Express greeted each other when they met the train. Shortly thereafter, the latter arrived at the scene of the accident and his diesel locomotive drove into the derailed wagons at full speed. The engine driver and Beimann were killed.

At least 209 people died and over 250 were injured.

Further worth knowing

The Frontier Golden Temple Mail suffered another serious accident on May 15, 2003 when three sleeping cars burned out near the town of Ludhiana , killing 38 people.
