Masit railway accident
The Masit railway accident on January 5, 1998 was a rear-end collision in front of the Masit train station in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh when a passenger train crashed into an express train. At least 51 people died.
Starting position
The express train from Varanasi to Vishwanath ran over a Nilgau antelope , damaging a brake hose on its vacuum brake . That's why he was at 21:15 unscheduled with two kilometers to the railway station are Masit. At the rear it was covered by the signal showing "Halt" , which secured the block section in which it was located. The line was equipped with a line block, but not with train control , which would have led to an emergency braking if a signal showing “stop” had been passed.

consequences
At least 51 people died and more than 100 were injured. The most severely damaged passenger car , a 2nd class open seating car , was hit by a bogie that was thrown away and crushed. Those trapped underneath could only be recovered when the bogie was lifted away.
The rescue work was not very effective. A rescue train was only dispatched at 5:00 a.m. the following day and did not reach the scene of the accident until around noon.
