Qiewu railway accident
In the Qiewu railway accident on January 24, 1988, express train No. 80 from Kunming to Shanghai derailed between Qiewu ( 且 午 站 , Qiěwǔ zhàn ) and Dengjiacun ( 邓 家村 站 , Dèngjiācūn zhàn ) in the city of Xuanwei in Yunnan Province , People's Republic of China . 88 people died and another 62 were seriously injured.
The second to seventh passenger cars after the locomotive overturned, the eighth to thirteenth cars derailed, only the last two cars , the fourteenth and fifteenth, remained on the track . The route could only be opened to traffic again after 44 hours and 33 minutes.
A consequence of the accident was that, by resolution of the 25th session of the National People's Congress on March 12, 1988, the Minister of Railways Ding Guangen ( 丁关根 , Dīng Guāngēn , 1929–2012) had to resign.
