Tongi railway accident

The Tongi railway accident was the head-on collision of two completely overstaffed express trains on January 15, 1989 in Tongi station , Bangladesh . At least 130 people died.

the accident

One train was on its way from Dhaka to Chittagong , the other was traveling in the opposite direction. Both trains were completely overstaffed. One (Pakistani) source names numerous Muslim believers who were on pilgrimage as the cause , another source names numerous office workers who were in rush hour on the way to Dhaka. Some of the people traveled on the roofs of the wagons and between the wagons . The sources do not name the cause of the head-on collision, only that an investigation has been opened under the direction of a judge at the Bangladesh Supreme Court.

consequences

At least 130 people died and more than 1,000 were injured. A nationwide day of mourning for the victims of the railway accident has been declared.
