Tongi ( Bengali : টঙ্গী , ṭaṅgī ; earlier Anglicising: Tungi ) is an industrial city in Bangladesh north of Dhaka . According to the 2011 census, the city has 476,350 inhabitants. Tongi consists of 9 wards (boroughs).
The city is growing very rapidly so that it will soon be completely merged with the city of Dhaka.
Tongi is best known for hosting the Bishwa Ijtema , a mass religious event that attracts more than a million visitors each year.
