Zamora railway accident

In the railway accident in Zamora (Spain) on June 2, 2020, a high-speed train collided with a motor vehicle that had fallen onto the track and derailed. A passenger in the locomotive was killed.

Starting position

The accident occurred on the conventional broad gauge line A Coruña – Medina del Campo , about eight kilometers outside of Zamora . Here a road crosses the railway line with a bridge. The route is not secured against objects that get onto the track. The maximum speed allowed here on the railway line is 120 km / h.

The Alvia high-speed train was on this route as route 11553 in the direction of Madrid with 158 passengers. It consisted of two coupled units of the RENFE series 730 . The leading vehicle came from Ferrol , where the train had left at 10:37, the second railcar from Pontevedra . The two units had been coupled in Ourense .

the accident

A heavy Land Rover came off the road crossing the railway line and crashed into the track. The 89-year-old driver was killed. The vehicle had already been on the track for about an hour - unnoticed by other drivers or railway workers - when the multiple unit approached at 115 km / h.

In the impact at 4:11 p.m., the leading power car derailed , then hit a stack of concrete sleepers that had been piled up for maintenance work next to the track, was torn off by the following generator car , turned 180 °, tilted on its side and remained there . In addition to the leading power car, all of the following cars on the front part of the train derailed. The rear powered end car and the following, second multiple unit remained on the track.

consequences

A train driver for training who rode on the leading vehicle was killed. The driver was seriously injured, as were seven passengers.

The route remained closed for repairs until June 25, 2020.
