The term used today is iron stones . In the case of iron limestone, one speaks of Phanerozoic iron stones according to modern concepts . In terms of appearance, the term oolithic iron stone has established itself .

The sediments, formerly known as iron limestone, can appear as dense, porous, bioclastic or oolitic facies . They mostly originated in coastal areas of the sea within different geological time periods. Typical are the Ordovician , Silurian , Jura , Cretaceous and Eocene .

The type-defining iron minerals include hematite and chamosite in Paleozoic sediments, goethite and berthierite in Mesozoic layers, and more rarely magnetite , siderite and glauconite . The high content of iron minerals gives the rocks mainly a dark beige to brown color.

Rocks of this type occur in Europe in Germany ( Breisgau , Harz , Württemberg ), France, England ( Isle of Wight , Northamptonshire ), mainly in Jurassic deposits. In South America there are deposits in northwest Argentina ( Quebrada Ancha ).
