Bakkene made his debut in the Cross Country World Cup in February 2011 in Drammen , where he finished 58th in the sprint. In January 2012 he reached his first top 10 places in the Scandinavian Cup with seventh place in the Åsarna sprint and a week later eighth place in the Nes sprint . At the U23 World Championships 2012 in Erzurum Bakkene was twelfth in the sprint. Bakkene finished his second World Cup appearance in the sprint of Drammen in March 2014 on rank 56. In February 2015 he achieved his first podium finish in the Scandinavian Cup with third place in the freestyle sprint in Jõulumäe . In the 2015/16 season he scored his first World Cup points with 16th place in the sprint in Planica .
