from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As ectromelia (from ancient Greek ἐκτροπή ektropē , avert, deviation 'and μέλος mélos , member') refers to a congenital defect formation in the region of the arms or legs. Single or multiple long bones are not developed or are too small.

Ectromelia is the largest group of extremity malformations. It mostly affects the upper extremity. It includes the Madelung deformity , which occurs when there is a growth disorder in the distal radius . When the spoke is missing completely, it comes to club hand . Split hand and split foot are also counted among the ectromelia. These defects can be associated with contractures .

Ectromelia are caused by ionizing radiation, viral infections or mutagenic substances during pregnancy. Therapy is based on the disorder. Surgical procedures and prostheses are used to enable the limb to function as well as possible.

There is a disease in mice caused by the ectromelia virus . As with ectromelia, it can cause the absence of long bones, along with other symptoms of the disease.
