El Cabril

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

El Cabril is a nuclear waste - repository for low and intermediate level radioactive waste in Spain.

The repository was put into operation in 1991. It is located near Cordoba in northern Andalusia . It was built on the model of the French Center de l'Aube , but in El Cabril the waste can be retrieved. A total of around 36,000 m³ of conditioned radioactive waste can be stored. This should be sufficient until around 2020. There are therefore currently no expansion plans.

A key difference to the French plant is the fact that the waste can be retrieved. The storage technology differs accordingly: In El Cabril, 18 barrels are placed in special concrete containers, which can later be removed from storage if required. 320 containers are stacked in a concrete chamber, of which there are 28 in total. There is also a building at the site for conditioning waste from isotope use in medicine, industry and research.

As in France, the repository is to be monitored for 300 years after its closure and then released for unrestricted use.
