El Cristo Roto, San José de Gracia, Mexico

El Cristo Roto ( Spanish also: Cristo Roto de la Isla ; German: The broken Christ ) is a statue of Christ near San José de Gracia in the municipality of the same name in the state of Aguascalientes in Mexico . It was built on an island in the heart of the Presa Presidente Calles in honor of the indigenous people and inaugurated in 2006.

In contrast to most of the other large statues, it is not a blessing Christ, but a suffering person who is obviously missing his right arm and mostly his right leg. The figure reflects the plight and fate of the indigenous people in the face of the exodus before the disaster, of which the population is still aware. A plaque on the base commemorates the poor and the oppressed.

Access to the statue is only possible via the water: visitors must board one of the well-secured boats to reach the island. Then they climb a staircase to reach the pilgrimage church there ("Santuario del Cristo Roto"). With its 25 meters and a base of three meters, it is the second largest Christ sculpture in Mexico. It is made of concrete and steel.

Text of the plaque

On the base is a poem in Spanish about the interpretation of the sculpture:

"Let me be broken ...
I want you to see me broken,
remember your many brothers who
are like me: broken, crushed,
poor, oppressed, sick, handicapped ...
Without arms because they have no chances
or means of work; without feet because they
blocked the streets for them;
without a cross because they have been deprived of their dignity,
honor and prestige.
You have forgotten everything and turned your back on them,
although they are like me ...
a broken Christ. "
