San José de Gracia is the name of one of the eleven municipalities in the Mexican state of Aguascalientes . The administrative seat and largest place of the municipality is the eponymous San José de Gracia . The municipality has 8443 inhabitants (2010) and covers an area of 868.9 km². It is the third largest in the state in terms of area and also has the smallest population.
geography
The municipality of San José de Gracia is located in the northwest of the state of Aguascalientes at an altitude between 1900 m and 3100 m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Sierra Madre Occidental . The municipality is located in the catchment area of the Río Lerma and thus drains into the Pacific . The geology of the municipality is dominated by rhyolite tuffs (95.8%); Soil type of 37.4% of the municipality is the Leptosol with 15.8% Planosol , 14.5% Phaeozem , 13.1% Luvisol and 10.4% Cambisol . Almost half of the municipal area is forested, a good 30% is used as pasture land, and around 10% is used for agriculture.
The municipality of San José de Gracia borders on the municipalities of Rincón de Romos , Pabellón de Arteaga , Jesús María and Calvillo, and to the north and west on the state of Zacatecas .

The 2010 census counted 8443 people in 1884 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 38 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 13 speakers of Huichol . About 3.4% of the population were illiterate. 2,863 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which approx. 72% were men and almost 15% were unemployed. A good seven percent of the population lived in extreme poverty.
