Aguascalientes is the name of the southernmost of the eleven municipalities of the Mexican state of the same name , Aguascalientes . The administrative seat and largest city of the municipality is the city of the same name, Aguascalientes , which is also the capital of the state. The municipality has 797,010 inhabitants and covers an area of 1181.24 km², making it both the largest in area and by far the most populous in the state.

The municipality of Aguascalientes is located in the south of the state of Aguascalientes at an altitude between 1400 m and 2500 m . About two thirds of it belong to the physiographic province of the Mesa del Centro , about 20% belong to the Sierra Volcánica Transversal , about 14% to the Sierra Madre Occidental . The municipality drains completely over the Río Lerma into the Pacific . The geology of the municipality is dominated by sedimentary rock (58%) with 19% alluvial and 13% extrusive rock . Soil type of 64.5% of the municipality is Phaeozem . Almost half of the community area is used for arable farming, a good 30% is pasture land.
The municipality of Aguascalientes borders the municipalities Calvillo , Jesús María , San Francisco de los Romo , Asientos and El Llano, and to the south on the state of Jalisco .

In the 2010 census, 797,010 people in 201,071 residential units were counted in the municipality. Of these, 1,790 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 308 Nahuatl speakers and 108 Mazahua speakers . A little over 2.5% of the population was illiterate. 336,974 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which approx. 62% were men or 6.2% were unemployed. A good two percent of the population lived in extreme poverty.
