El Floridita is a bar in the center of Havana , Cuba . It was opened in 1817 under the name La Piña de Plata and is one of the most famous in the world.

history

The Daiquiri , a cocktail made from rum, sugar and lime juice, is said to have been invented in the El Floridita bar and is considered their signature drink . The legend of its origin is, however, controversial, as the Daiquiri is named after a settlement of the same name near Santiago de Cuba. Especially through Ernest Hemingway , the bar and the daiquiri gained fame, whereby Hemingway is said to have always drank his own variant of the cocktail with twice the amount of rum, as well as grapefruit juice and maraschino and without sugar, which he called Papa Doble . From Hemingway comes the saying: "My Mojito in La Bodeguita, my Daiquiri in El Floridita" ("My Mojito in the Bodeguita, my Daiquiri in the Floridita") . At the counter in the bar room of El Floridita sits a bronze figure of Hemingway, created in 2003 by José Villa Soberón , who is served a daiquiri every day by the bartenders at El Floridita.

Founded under the name “La Piña de Plata” (The Silver Pineapple), later El Florida, the bar was considered one of the best bars in the world. Last elected as one of the seven best bars in the world in the Esquire in 1953 , the bar lost its importance for Americans due to the Cuban revolution . In 1992 the bar won the Five Star Diamond for best of the best. The guests included Naomi Campbell , Pierce Brosnan , Sean Connery and the designer Paco Rabanne .

location

The bar is located at Obispo No. 557 esq. a Monserrate in the old town La Habana Vieja , close to Parque Central and the classic grand hotels typical of Havana.
