Ismael Zambada García

Ismael Zambada García (aka El Mayo ; born January 1, 1948 in El Álamo, Badiraguato ) is a Mexican drug lord of the Sinaloa cartel . He is one of the most wanted drug lords in Mexico and the United States . After El Chapo was arrested in late February 2014 and until his escape from prison in 2015, El Mayo was considered his successor and alleged leader of the Sinaloa cartel.

Life

Zambada was born in El Álamo, a village in the Municipio Badiraguato (Sinaloa).

In 2009 he granted an interview to the journalist Julio Scherer García . In it he describes his everyday life and his family relationships.

Several of his family members are involved in drug trafficking. His eldest son, Jesús Vicente Zambada Niebla (aka El Vicentillo) was arrested in Mexico City in 2009 and extradited to the United States in 2010. He is in a US prison. His son Serafín Zambada Ortiz was arrested by the DEA in the United States in November 2013 .

His brother Jesús Reynaldo Zambada García (aka El Rey), who was extradited to the United States in 2012, was also arrested in 2008. His son Omar Ismael Zambada Apodaca and Sergio Rodolfo Cázares Zambada, son of his eldest sister Águeda, were arrested together in Tijuana in April 2012.

Criminal career

Zambada is said to have entered the drug trade as early as 1964 at the age of 16. Together with El Chapo , he was one of the founders of the Sinaloa cartel in 1989. This cooperation continued until his arrest.

On January 28, 2003, he was convicted in absentia by a Washington DC court. The US set aside five million dollars for information leading to his arrest. In the same year he was named "drug lord number 1" by the Mexican authorities.

On May 17, 2007, the US Office of Foreign Assets Control frozen assets allegedly belonging to its financial network.

Despite decades of criminal activity, he was never arrested.

On February 22, 2014, El Chapo , a long-time leader in the Sinaloa cartel , was arrested. As his successor was initially Ismael Zambada García.
