El Ombú is a German-speaking Mennonite colony in the Río Negro Department , Uruguay . It is located 284 km northwest of Montevideo .
history
El Ombú was founded in 1950 as the first Mennonite colony in Uruguay. Initially there were 350 settlers who wanted to settle here, although around 750 people had arrived at the Volendam in Uruguay two years earlier . There were a total of 80 families and twelve individuals who settled on about 1,200 hectares . The colony later grew and by 2012 had up to 4,800 hectares of land. In the same year only about 180 people lived in El Ombú. Most of the settlers live from dairy farming and agriculture. The cooperative "Cooperativa Las Flores de Rio Negro" was founded in September 1950.
At the end of the 1950s a church was built, before the service took place in the open air.
Residents
The place had 53 inhabitants in the 2011 census, of which 24 were men and 29 women.
