Elastoplasty

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Elastoplastie is similar to the kyphoplasty a minimally invasive procedure for treating vertebral fractures .

The development of elastoplasty using silicone-elastic VK100 combines the results of kypho- or vertebroplasty with an elastic filler that is supposed to improve the disadvantages of PMMA , such as tissue toxicity, lack of ingrowth in the cancellous bone and excessive rigidity.

Tissue compatibility should be improved by the lack of heat development, as well as a reduction in circulatory stress, embolisms and leakages , since no monomers are released. A reduction in connecting fractures through an optimized modulus of elasticity should be given; no intervertebral necrosis due to exothermic reaction, but interdigitation with cancellous bone and optimized load distribution on the vertebral body.

indication

The indications are identical to those for kyphoplasty, i.e. for vertebral fractures with osteoporotic , traumatic or tumorous pathogenesis .

technology

The procedure is usually carried out in the prone position under fluoroscopy. It can be performed under local anesthesia , but the operation is more often performed under general anesthesia . After sterile washing and covering, depending on the technique, one or two cannulas are inserted into the vertebral body via the vertebral arches under X-ray control and then the interior of the vertebral body is prepared for the material implantation. Then the broken vertebral body is filled with silicone-elastic VK100.

Complications

Essential complications of an elastoplasty, similar to kyphoplasty, are the leakage of the not yet solidified silicone from the vertebral body into the adjoining vessels and the associated complications. In one study, pulmonary artery embolism was more common with elastoplasty than with kypho- and vertebroplasty.
