Elative (case)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The elative is a case that occurs mainly in Finno-Ugric languages and expresses the movement out.

It can be reproduced in German with the prepositions aus, von .

Basque

In Basque , the elative is derived from the insessive inanimat, to which the suffix -dik (after the vowel -tik ) is added. An example would be etxetik “from the house”.

Finnish

In Finnish , the postfix is -sta or -stä , which is based on the vowel harmony . E.g. talosta "from the house", kädestä "from the hand"

Estonian

In Estonian the elative ends with -st or in the plural with -test or -dest . E.g. rongist "from the train"

Hungarian

In Hungarian , the ending is -ból or -ből after the vowel harmony . E.g. házból "out of the house"
